Where to find professional help?

Private office consultation (at your expense or at the insurer's expense)

To help you find a psychologist or psychotherapist, the Ordre offers an online search tool.

Professionals are listed according to:

  • the problems they treat
  • their region of practice
  • the types of client they serve

The tool will also enable you to find out:

  • the date they obtained their permit
  • the types of work/contracts they accept (e.g. CSST, IVAC, SAAQ, expert testimony in court)
  • their theoretical orientation

Your family doctor or other healthcare professional can give you a psychologist’s or psychotherapist’s contact information directly.

Public services

CLSCs offer a reception, analysis, orientation and referral service for all social and psychological requests. You can consult a psychosocial counsellor with or without an appointment, during the day and evening on weekdays, and at certain times on weekends.

Employee assistance programs

Some employers have an employee assistance program (EAP) that offers free access to a psychologist or psychotherapist for a set number of sessions. Call the EAP directly for the names of professionals who can help you.

Low-cost university clinics

Universities that provide training in psychology generally offer clinics to the public. These services are often less expensive than those of self-employed psychologists, but the conditions of consultation may be different. (For example, the consultation is offered by a doctoral student in psychology under the supervision of a psychologist.)
