What is psychologist?
A psychologist is an expert in behaviour, emotions and mental health. He or she works with people who are experiencing distress or psychological difficulties.
Each psychologist has completed between seven and nine years of university studies in psychology. Their training enables them to understand human behaviour and the best ways to help their clients resolve their psychological difficulties.
The psychologist's work involves:
- assessing a person's psychological functioning and mental health;
- identifying interventions or treatments that could help;
- carrying out the interventions or treatments he or she is qualified to provide, such as psychotherapy;
- if he or she feels that the person needs medication, recommending that they consult a physician.
In Quebec, to hold the title and practice the profession of psychologist, you must:
- have completed a doctorate in psychology (this requirement has been in effect since 2006; psychologists who graduated with a master's degree before that date are not required to earn a doctorate).
- be registered with the Ordre des psychologues du Québec.
- comply with all applicable laws and regulations, including the Code of ethics of psychologists.
The scope of practice of psychologists, according to the law:
“[…] assess psychological and mental functioning, and determine, recommend and carry out interventions or treatments with a view to fostering the psychological health and restoring the mental health of a person in interaction with his or her environment.
Information, health promotion and the prevention of suicide, illness, accidents and social problems are also part of the practice of the profession with individuals, families and communities.”
